The US has said it welcomes North Korea’s announcement that two American journalists arrested near the border with China would be tried on 4 June.
Secretary of state Hillary Clinton said “the fact that they are now going to have some process” was a sign that the cases against Laura Ling and Euna Lee could be resolved.
The reporters for former vice president Al Gore’s San Francisco-based Current TV media venture were detained on 17 March while reporting on North Korean refugees living in China.
North Korean media had said they were accused of illegal entry and unspecified “hostile acts” – charges that could carry up to 10 years in prison.
