Winning ways: Sentinel Sunday: best weekly, (inset) Village: new Irish title and the Independent ‘s Whitewash? cover
Sentinel Sunday beat off national and international competition from 333 newspapers across Europe in the sixth European Newspaper Awards for Design.
Launched in 2000, Sentinel Sunday was named Europe’s Best Designed Newspaper in the weekly category.
With 26 countries entering the awards, the Sentinel was this year’s only overall British winner in a competition which drew entries from The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The Independent On Sunday and The Observer.
It was the first time the paper had entered the award. The accolade follows a successful year as it was named Daily/Sunday Newspaper of the Year for the second year running at Press Gazette’s Regional Press Awards. It was also named West Midlands Newspaper Of The Year for the second successive year.
The broadsheet has two sections written and produced by its sister evening tabloid’s regular staff, consisting of just two dedicated staff – an editor and chief sub-editor.
Commenting on the award, Staffordshire Sentinel Newspapers editor-in-chief, Sean Dooley, said: “So many of our staff enjoy switching between working on the broadsheet and the tabloid and they are such different disciplines.
“Despite the fact that those working on the design regularly swap shifts, we have still established a culture of consistently good design.”
The Independent’s cover with the word Whitewash?, following the publication of the Hutton Report last January, was named as one of the national newspaper front pages of the year.
The newly-launched tabloid in Ireland, Village, was granted a judges’ special mention for designs by London-based design studio Belknap + Co.
There were also awards for the design of The Independent Review; The Observer’s Review front pages; The Herald’s supplements and typography; The Daily Telegraph’s and The Sunday Herald’s section front pages.

The Guardian also picked up awards for the design of its pages on the Beslan school siege; illustration; and Chemical World supplement.
The European Newspaper Awards are organised by the newspaper designer Norbert Kupper and the two journalists’ magazines, Medium Magazin (Germany) and Osterreichischer Journalist (Austria).
