Top award for Observer

By Press Gazette

The Observer, The Face, Marie Claire, Large and MacUser were among the titles commended for their design expertise at the Magazine Design Awards 2003. The awards, presented by T4 presenter June Sarpong, took place at London restaurant Mezzo on Tuesday night.

The Observer picked up the prize for best designed newspaper supplement and won the overall Magazine of the Year award for Crime Uncovered. Designer Gavin Brammall, who created the front cover image, pictured right, with a hammer, centre plunge and wire clipper, said: “I was amazed we got something that looked like the British Isles. I didn’t expect to win at all.”

Marie Claire was named best designed consumer magazine (over 40,000 circulation), MacUser won B2B front cover and The Face picked up two awards for mass-market consumer front cover and best use of illustration.
