The new editor-in-chief of the Press Association is planning to extend the “geographical footprint” of the agency’s video news service over the next year. He will employ video journalists in cities across the country to provide content for local and national newspapers.
Tony Watson, currently editorial director, will take up his new post and join the board of directors of PA Group from 1 January. He replaces Paul Potts, who will remain in his other role as chief executive of PA Group.
Watson said: “Just as PA has always been at the heart of the traditional media, over the next few years we aim to ensure that it is also at the centre of the evolving digital landscape.
“We are already established in that marketplace, but we plan to put people in major cities across the UK to provide content for our customers in the next 12 to 18 months.”
Watson, who won acclaim and several awards during his 13-year stint as editor of the Yorkshire Post, is a member of the Press Gazette Regional Newspaper Hall of Fame. He joined PA in 2004 and has also worked on Granada’s World in Action programme.
