The Times has signalled its ambition to become an “international media brand” by launching a US edition.
From
6 June, to coincide with the start of the World Cup, News International
is to begin printing a few thousands copies a day of the Times on the
presses of the New York Post, which is also part of parent company News
Corp.
Times editor Robert Thomson is a former US editor of the
Financial Times – a paper which has offset declining UK sales in recent
years by expanding into the US and Asia.
He said: “This is a key
moment in the development of The Times as an international media brand.
We have seen a large increase in our Times Online readership in the US
and the appearance of the newspaper on the streets of New York marks
the next stage in our print and web expansion. The Times has one of the
largest international networks of any newspaper in the world and US
readers want and need sophisticated global political and economic
coverage.”
The title will be edited by John Mair, who is in charge of the international edition.
