Tim Gopsill retires after 21 years editing The Journalist

Tim Gopsill is to retire after 21 years editing The Journalist – the in-house magazine for the National Union of Journalists.

Gopsill’s scoops during his time in charge of the bi-monthly magazine included tracking down and interviewing an NUJ finance officer who had disappeared and was the subject of a police investigation.

Changes Gopsill has overseen include giving The Journalist a new design in recent months. The Journalist experimented with going online-only for one issue last year only to bring back the print edition by popular demand. As a cost-cutting measure it has gone from ten to six issues a year.

NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear said: “Tim took over The Journalist after a difficult period when two editors had left in quick succession. He oversaw the change from a newspaper distributed in the office to a glossy magazine delivered to everyone’s home.

“He won two elections and was unopposed twice – so he enjoyed the support of the union’s members. As well as editing the magazine he co-wrote the union’s centenary history. He’s an NUJ institution and we wish him well.”

The NUJ is inviting applications for the post of editor of the Journalist. To be shortlisted to stand in the election you must be a member of the union with five years’ continuous membership.
