The privacy ruling which upholds press right to pry into politicians’ private lives

By Press Gazette

Carina Trimingham, the partner of MP Chris Huhne, has had her claim for harassment and breach of privacy against the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday rejected by the High Court in a landmark ruling.

Mr Justice Tungendhat handed down a judgment which found Trimingham was 'not the purely private figure'she claimed to be and that her 'reasonable expectation of privacy'had become limited.

After the judgment she claimed the decision could become a 'blueprint for bullies and bigots'and vowed to lodge an appeal.

But the Daily Mail has hailed the ruling as a "a hugely important victory for the freedom of the media as a whole".
