NUJ members have expressed their “grave concern” over the way police reveal details about terrorism related arrests.
A
motion to the union’s annual delegate meeting, tabled by the NUJ Black
Members’ Council, covers “deliberate leaks from the police and/or
intelligence services to the press at the time of arrests”.
It adds: “The subsequent admission that those arrested had done nothing illegal hardly registers at all in the media.”
The
motion urges journalists to adhere to the union’s code of conduct which
states that information about a person’s race, age, sex, colour, creed,
marital status or disability should only included in a story when
strictly relevant.
The meeting is being held from April 7-10 in Scarborough.
