The Evening Gazette, Teesside, has celebrated the opening of a world-class art gallery in Middlesbrough by giving the paper a modern art makeover. A cover celebrating the launch of the £14.2 million Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (Mima), was inspired by artistic legends such as Picasso, Andy Warhol and Lichtenstein. Coverage inside the paper included a giant vox pop with readers’ views on the gallery photographed through a picture frame.
Creative studio manager Kieron Goldsborough said: ‘Taking a single image of Mima as a starting point we all developed it in our own way using a particular modern art style. It’s the first time in the paper’s 138-year history that it’s done anything like this. But we wanted to create something really striking and original to celebrate the opening.’Editor Darren Thwaites said: ‘The art gallery is truly stunning and it says so much about the regeneration of this region. It was fantastic to have so much artistic talent in our own office.”
