Syal defects to Observer

Rajeev Syal, a senior reporter for The Times, has been named as the incoming investigations editor for The Observer.

Observer editor John Mulholland said: ‘He is a formidable journalist with a terrific track record of breaking important stories. We look forward to him joining a successful Observer team.’

Syal said: ‘It’s great to be joining The Observer at such an exciting time in its long and illustrious history.’

Syal joined The Sunday Times as a trainee in 1992 where he was a reporter and religious affairs correspondent. In 1998, he joined The Sunday Telegraph as a reporter before joining The Times in 2005 as senior reporter.

He is due to start his new job later in the summer.

He replaces Antony Barnett who left The Observer to join Channel 4’s documentary show Dispatches.
