Student title safe

By Press Gazette

The future of Aberdeen University’s student newspaper Gaudie is secure.

A freshers’ edition was published this week under new editor Marie Bailey, and it will be printed weekly during term time – 27 editions a year.

The future of the newspaper had been in doubt after previous editor Mark Highfield resigned – alleging unprecedented editorial interference from the university’s student association, amid claims that a member of the association management committee would be installed as the new editor.

However, student association officials denied interference but stressed that Gaudie had to be put on a sound financial basis as it was costing £40,000 a year. Now the finances of the 4,000 circulation paper have been put on a steadier footing with George Lang, the student association’s vicepresident for societies and student development, handling all the commercial aspects of Gaudie.

Lang said he would act as the interface between the editorial team and the student association and he was confident that Gaudie would go from strength to strength.
