Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

Strike ballot called off at ITV over job cull of 429

By Dominic Ponsford

The National Union of Journalists has called off a proposed strike ballot at ITV Regional News over proposals to cut 429 jobs out of 1,075 staff.

TV journalists were to ballot for industrial action after rejecting the redundancy terms on offer as the company seeks to shed 40 per cent of its regional editorial staff.

According to the National Union of Journalists more than half of those at risk are journalists.

They had rejected the proposed redundancy terms of three weeks’ pay per year of service up to a maximum of £36,000, rising to £40,000 for those who volunteered to go.

Today they accepted a new agreement which includes further incentives for those taking voluntary redundancy.

NUJ broadcasting organiser Paul McLaughlin said: ‘We’re pleased that constructive negotiations have resulted in an offer that has been accepted by our members.

“Clearly there are still concerns around the massive cuts that are being proposed, but we now have an agreement that allows the space for further talks to continue.
