The stomach-churning truth about the Labour spin machine revealed by
Monday night’s Channel 4 Dispatches did not really lie in the details
painstakingly researched by reporter Jenny Kleeman – from the use of
party activists to pose as “real” voters to the systematic targeting of
regional newspapers’
letter pages with fake letters, purporting to be from local residents but written by PR officers.
It
was more in the gleeful and entirely guilt-free way its practitioners
embraced the deceit from the grassroots to the highest branches of the
tree.
As Mark Borkowski wrote in The Guardian, it should be every
editor’s duty to hold a magnifying glass to every scrap of political
propaganda from Number 10. Or Cowley Street or Victoria Street.
