Trevor Bond has stood down after nine years as secretary of the
Sports Journalists’ Association of Great Britain at the annual general
meeting, but will continue on the general committee.
Bond, a
former sports editor of The Sunday Telegraph and The Mail on Sunday,
will also stand for re-election as deputy general secretary of the
International Sports Press Association (AIPS) at its Annual Congress in
Marrakesh, Morocco, in May.
He is succeeded as secretary by the
freelance sports writer Steven Downes, who is a regular contributor on
athletics, football, cricket and Olympic sports for Scotland on Sunday
and the Sunday Mirror.
Special guest at the AGM, held at Sport
England’s Bloomsbury Square headquarters, was the double Olympic gold
medallist Kelly Holmes.
She was presented with the AIPS
Sportswoman of the Year award, having topped a poll of more than 10,000
sports journalists in 144 countries around the world.
Holmes received her trophy from the SJA’s Sports Writer of the Year, Duncan Mackay of The Guardian and The Observer.
She
also collected a special diploma awarded by the European Union of the
Sporting Press (UEPS) and presented to her by RTE sports broadcaster
Jimmy Magee.
