Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

Sky targets Telegraph’s Mark Kleinman for business role

By Dominic Ponsford

Sky News is understood to be looking to hire a Fleet Street big hitter to take on BBC business editor Robert Peston.

And according to one well-placed source, Sunday Telegraph business editor Mark Kleinman has been approached to take the job.

Press Gazette understands that Sky News is seeking to further beef up its business news coverage after being beaten to most of the plaudits for covering the credit crunch and the recession by Peston.

Peston was named journalist of the year by the Royal Television Society earlier this year for his series of scoops. Judges said he “owned the story of the credit crunch”.

The source said Sky was keen to promote Kleinman as its answer to Peston.

Kleinman was made City editor of the Sunday Telegraph in November 2007.

He was previously based in Hong Kong as Asia business editor for both Telegraph titles and before that he was mergers and acquisitions and media correspondent for The Sunday Times.

Kleinman would be following in the footsteps of Peston, who was himself City editor of the Sunday Telegraph until October 2005 when he made his move into broadcasting as BBC business editor.

Sky poached Daily Telegraph editor-at-large Jeff Randall to front a new nightly business news show last November.

Kleinman could not be reached for a comment this morning. Sky News had not responded with a comment at the time of writing.
