Sky News has confirmed it is looking to open a bureau in the Gulf next year, with senior executives at the rolling news channel looking at either the United Arab Emirates of nearby Qatar as potential locations.
The broadcaster, which already has a Middle East bureau in Jerusalem, has said it intends to open the new bureau within the next 12 to 18 months.
Head of news John Ryley, head of foreign news Adrian Wells and foreign affairs editor Tim Marshall held meetings with potential advertisers in Dubai and Doha last week.
If Sky chooses Doha, it will be close to rival rolling news channel Al Jazeera, which has its headquarters in the Qatar capital.
Dubai, meanwhile, is home to 24-hour news channel Al-Arabiya and bureaux for Reuters and CNN.
In an interview with Dubai-based newspaper Xpress, John Ryley said: “We’re looking to open a front door in the Gulf region in addition to our eight bureaux that cover major capitals from Beijing to Washington.”
