ITN political editor John Sergeant is to present the Regional Press Awards at London’s Hilton Hotel on 6 July.
One of the best-known faces on television news, Sergeant quit the BBC last year to join rival ITN. Equally at home in light entertainment shows such as Have I Got News For You as he is on the political scene, he started his journalistic career as a trainee sub at the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo.
"I am delighted to present these awards," he said. "I was not a very good regional paper reporter; on one occasion I was called in by the proprietor of the Post and Echo, Sir Alick Jeans, to be told that I had not made it as a sub. I was allowed to work as a mere reporter. Once I had finished my three years’ indentures I landed a job as a BBC reporter in London and I am still grateful for my training in Liverpool. I look forward to reminiscing with Ian Park, the man who gave me my first job in journalism."
More than 700 entries have been received and judges are now preparing shortlists. Final judging takes place over two days in early June and shortlists will be published in Press Gazette on 15 June. For table bookings, phone Nicky Lusignani on 020 8565 4463 or e-mail her at nickyl@qpp.co.uk.
