A project to preserve historic local newspaper on microfilm has completed the period between 1700 and 1950.
The Newsplan 2000 project is a £7.3 million initiative backed by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the newspaper industry and libraries. Delivery of microfilm-reading equipment to libraries and archives has begun.
A microfilm copy of each newspaper saved by the programme will also be given to the appropriate public library, where it will be available to the public free of charge.
