Sarah Sands has been announced as the new editor of the London Evening Standard.
The newspaper executive was promoted to the top job from deputy editor and the news was released on Twitter by the paper's owner Evgeny Lebedev.
He said: "Proud to announce Sarah Sands is new Standard editor. Sure she and her brilliant staff will do a great job in a huge year for the paper."
The news follows the announcement of previous editor Geordie Greig's departure for the Mail on Sunday.
Writing in the Financial Times, Ms Sands recalled the days when as a young single mother she stood outside the newspaper offices and wondered what it would be like to work there.
She wrote: "Last week, I was appointed editor. Seasoned by the intervening years around Fleet Street – by which I mean a good deal older – I recall a gallery of newspaper characters who hold no meaning for the young staff.
"As in all great romances, everything turns to memories. Yet, for all that has happened, I am not so different from that hopeful young woman nursing a baby and longing to work for the Evening Standard. I can't wait to get started."
