Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

Reuters chief David Schlesinger wins Emmy award

By Paul McNally

Reuters editor-in-chief David Schlesinger is to pick up a lifetime achievement award tonight at the Emmy awards for business and financial reporting.

Schlesinger, who leads a team of more than 2,500 journalists working for Thomson Reuters, the newly merged global news agency, was praised for preserving its ‘core journalistic values’while embracing new technology.

Tonight’s awards ceremony in New York is part of the family of annual Emmy awards recognising excellence in television production, programming and technology, organised by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (Natas).

Natas chief executive Peter Price said: ‘More than any other news organisation, Reuters understands that there is no sharp dividing line between business reporting, political reporting, and other kinds of news.

‘As editor-in-chief, David Schlesinger has preserved the venerable organisation’s core journalistic values while enthusiastically embracing the possibilities and challenges of the digital age, and we are proud to honour him for this achievement.”

Schlesinger, who joined Reuters 21 years ago as Hong Kong correspondent, ran bureaux in Taiwan and China before moving to New York in 1995 as financial editor and then managing editor for the Americas.

He became Reuters’ global managing editor five years ago and was promoted to Reuters editor-in-chief in January 2007.
