Regional Press Awards shortlist announced: MEN and Liverpool Echo have five finalists each

By William Turvill

The Manchester Evening News and Liverpool Echo top the nominations for the Society of Editors’ Regional Press Awards 2012 with five shortlisted entries each

Les Reid of the Coventry Telegraph, meanwhile, is shortlisted for three individual awards and his paper is also a finalist in the Campaign of the Year.

The Edinburgh Evening News, Basildon Echo, Lincolnshire Echo and Western Mail also had finalists in four categories each.

Announced today, there were more than 600 applications for the 22 categories.

Chairman of the judges, former Manchester Evening News editor Paul Horrocks, said: “The judges had a difficult task across all of the categories.

“In many cases any one of shortlisted candidates could be a winner and it is only after painstaking scrutiny and careful debate that the winners emerge.”

Society of Editors executive director Bob Satchwell said: “These awards reflect and spotlight the tremendous journalism that can be found every day or every week across the UK in regional and local newspapers that represent their readers and serve their communities so well.”
