Regional ABCs: Bulks help Archant dailies raise circ

By Press Gazette

Archant’s daily titles in Archant and Suffolk were the only daily newspapers in the UK to record a year-on-year increase in circulation in the last six months of 2011.

The Norwich Evening News was the best performing title, up 7.5 per cent to 18,931 (including 3,134 bulk copies), followed by the Eastern Daily Press, which was up 0.7 per cent to 59,802 (inc 5,869 bulks), the Ipswich Evening Star (up 0.4 per cent to 15,471 inc 1,984 bulks) and the East Anglian Daily Times (up 0.3 per cent to 29,771 inc 1,954 bulks).

But when increases in bulk (free) circulation are taken out of the equation, these titles were also down year on year.

There were also strong performances by the Plymouth Western Morning News, down just 1 per cent to 31,642, the Guernsey Press & Star (down 1.4 per cent to 15,022) and the Dundee Evening Telegraph (down 1.8 per cent to 29,904).

The worst performing daily papers were the Nottingham Post, which fell 17.2 per cent to 33,940, the Doncaster edition of The Star (down 15.1 per cent to 2,111) and the Liverpool Daily Post (down 13.7 per cent to 7,652), which switched to a weekly newspaper at the beginning of 2012.

The Express & Star (West Midlands) remains the UK’s biggest selling regional newspaper despite sales falling 10.9 per cent to 104,262.

Following are three lists for UK regional dailies ranked by: circulation, year on year circulation change and alphabetically.
