A group of Reed Business Information journalists have been awarded a new qualification introduced by the Periodical Publishers Association.

Contract Journal reporter Laura Hailstone, Computer Weekly senior reporter James Rogers, ICIS-LOR editor Jane Gibson, European Chemical News sub-editor Seema Chaudhary and The Business writer Emma Britton passed the Periodicals Training Council Professional Certificate in Journalism before Christmas.

The group had been working towards the certificate since summer 2001. Each had to compile a portfolio of their best published news stories and features and the accompanying background information.

They also had to demonstrate a working knowledge of media law, the publishing industry and the Press Complaints Commission Editors’ Code of Conduct, as well as undergoing an assessment at the Periodical Publishers Association headquarters in December.

“I’m so pleased for the five RBI journalists who passed, especially Laura and James, who gained merits,” said editorial training manager John Charlton.

“They’ve had to work their socks off to finish a demanding programme and, apart from gaining a qualification, they have substantially expanded their knowledge of key areas of journalism. This will serve them well in their careers.

“They are all better journalists for having done this qualification,” he added.
