RBI’s Tom Vaughan takes top PTC new journalist award

By Rachael Gallagher

Tom Vaughan of Reed Business Information title Caterer and Hotelkeeper has taken the overall prize at the Periodicals Training Council’s New Journalist of the Year Awards.

At the 25th annual ceremony held today in London, Vaughan was also awarded the PTC new business features journalist of the year award.

Judges described Vaghan’s work as ‘well-constructed, interesting and thoroughly enjoyable”. His editor, Mark Lewis, added: ‘When Tom’s copy hits the commissioning editor’s desk, it is witty, polished, free of cliché and ready for the page.”

The New Journalist of the Year Awards were set up to recognise up-and-coming editorial and design talent in the publishing industry, with senior editorial and design staff from the publishing industry acting as judges in the nine categories.

CMP Information picked up five awards, with Tina Smith of Property Week scooping the award for new designer of the year and four other CMPI journalists being highly commended.

Josh Woodfin from Bauer Media’s FHM and FHM.com beat off competition from rival men’s magazines Shortlist and Zoo to win new consumer journalist of the year.

The editor of BBC Focus magazine Jheni Osman was crowned new editor of the year.
