Archant Regional publisher Mike Almond has left the group after 17 years to oversee the running of his own paper in the Algarve.
Almond, 52, had always dreamed of running the English-language weekly, the Algarve Resident, and took early retirement from Archant Herts and Cambs. He will become publishing director of the paid-for title on 1 September.
He will travel to Portugal every month and will run the paper from his home in Suffolk.
Almond said: "I am happiest when producing newspapers, and what better place to do it than the Algarve? If I don't do it now, I never will — and I am really excited about it."
Almond joined Archant in 1989 as editor of the West Suffolk Mercury series, before moving to Herts in 1993 to become managing editor at Mid-Anglia Newspapers. When Mid-Anglia became part of Archant Anglia, Almond also assumed responsibility for the Anglia Advertiser series.
