Yorkshire Evening Post news editor Scott Armstrong has swapped the cut and thrust of the newsdesk for the world of academia.
Armstrong is to replace Tony Metcalf as head of media, arts and design at Darlington College of Technology. Metcalf has returned to the industry to run a newspaper in the Middle East.
Armstrong has worked as deputy news editor on the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, where he was also reporter, and was previously north-east correspondent for the Press Association. He has also worked for the Sunday Sun, News Team International and the Grimsby Telegraph.
Armstrong said: “I was responsible for the trainees at the Yorkshire Evening Post and getting them through their NCTJ. At the Chronicle I helped set up a mentoring scheme. Some of the youngsters I worked with went on to win awards so it was quite satisfying.
“When I saw this job advertised in Press Gazette it was too big not to go for. I’m hoping we can make sure the people we turn out here have got fire in their eyes and are willing to knock on doors until they get the story.”
