Zoo Weekly is to drop the “Weekly” from its masthead as of this week because readers increasingly refer to it as “Zoo”, writes Ruth Addicott.
Editor Paul Merrill said a name change had been on the agenda for some time.
“Most people have been calling us ‘Zoo’ for weeks, so we thought it right to drop the ‘Weekly’,” he said.
“Everyone now realises we’re a weekly mag, so it wasn’t serving a purpose having it on the cover.”
The move comes a week after Zoo moved its publication day from Wednesday to Tuesday and reduced its cover price from £1.20 to 50p, a tactic it repeated this week.
IPC has also slashed the price of its £8m rival Nuts from £1.20 to 60p.
Zoo is facing a complaint to the Press Complaints Commission from a remote tribe in New Guinea over an article that suggested there were cannibals there who indulged in “random orgies”.
