The NUJ is calling for a lobby of Parliament on 19 May to rally support for the BBC to retain its licence fee.
The lobby is part of the union’s Hands Off the BBC campaign in which it opposes proposals by BBC rivals to so-called “top-slicing” of the £2.5bn it receives order to carry out its public service requirement.
“The future of Public Service Broadcasting is at stake and the NUJ is building a campaign to help preserve what’s best about UK broadcasting,” said the NUJ’s Paul McLaughlin. The union is also encouraging journalists and “sympathetic local groups” to participate in the consultations staged by Ofcom and the Department for Media.
