More than 16,000 people have signed up to the Scarborough Evening News's hospital campaign in seven weeks. Editor Ed Asquith delivered the petition and campaign forms protesting at proposals to cut Scarborough Hospital's services directly to the door of the Prime Minister.
Also present were Scarborough MP Robert Goodwill and chairman of a patient forum Leo McGrory. Asquith, who last month caught up with Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt in a car park for an impromptu interview about fears over the proposals in his local community, said: "The level of reader response was magnificent. The news-paper has been able to carry a beacon for the strong community reaction, and to be able to reflect in good, old-fashioned style local fears."
