The Manchester Evening News's recently relaunched website has beaten off national competition to become electronic news site of the year.
The regional newspaper website picked up the top online prize over BBC's News Online and Times Online at the Newspaper Awards.
Judges praised the site's use of news and user-generated content and commented on its use of audio, video and RSS.
Editor Paul Horrocks said the accolade "validates the serious news content that is produced in the newspaper and on the website".
The awards, which celebrate excellence in newspaper production, named The Guardian as Newspaper of the Year, while its Saturday edition picked up Weekend Newspaper of the Year and Guardian News & Media was named Environmental Newspaper Company of the Year.
Newspaper of the Year for weekdays was the Irish News, and the Oxford Times picked up the weekly category. The Sunday Herald was victorious in the newspaper design category.
The Financial Times's mobile news reader was named Most Innovative Technology of the Year. Johnston Press chief executive Tim Bowdler was named Personality of the Year.
