The Daily Mail has apologised to the author and playwright Sir Peter Shaffer after it alleged he had ignored the wishes of his dead twin brother Anthony in administering his estate.
An item in Richard Kay’s column on 10 October last year carried comments from Claudia Shaffer, Sir Peter’s niece, who questioned how he had run his brother’s estate since his death in 2001 and alleged that she and sister Cressida had been ‘improperly deprived of their inheritance”.
A statement read in open court today said: ‘This is completely untrue; Sir Peter has acted at all times entirely on legal advice and in accordance with the provisions of his late brother’s will and has administered his estate properly.”
Associated Newspapers, the Mail’s publisher, said it was happy to set the record straight and print the statement in the newspaper
