Magazine Design Awards winners announced

By Rachael Gallagher

Jon Butterworth

Jon Butterworth from Haymarket’s Camouflage won two awards.

Haymarket Network’s Jon Butterworth was named designer of year at this year’s Magazine Design Awards.

Butterworth is designer of Haymarket Network’s British Army recruitment magazine, Camouflage. The magazine won best designed front cover for the customer sector.

The judges said that his cover was one ‘with a clever editorial idea, and where the typography adds to the image”, and that Butterworth, who was nominated for four categories in total, was a ‘truly talented young man’and that ‘the designers and editors [at Camouflage] have captured the dramatic visual and story-telling possibilities of their subject.”

Butterworth was beaten to the post in the best-designed customer magazine by Mark Farrow and Jo Spreadborough at the Design Council Magazine, which the judges said was ‘Deliberately different from other customer magazines”.

The awards were presented at a ceremony in Soho club, Foridita this evening [Thursday 18 October]. The awards, which celebrate the best in magazine design, were presented alongside the Magazine Journalism Awards.

Young designer of the year went to Jonny Clark at Ryanair magazine – the in-flight publication for the budget airline. The judges said: ‘A fresh mind and a short pair of eyes makes for a bold, colourful design that delivers more than the standard in-flight magazine.’

Best designed consumer magazine under 40k went to John Levy at EI8HT, an independently published photo-journalism magazine. The judges said that the magazine was ‘intelligent design at work – carefully judged type and boldly presented photography.”

The winner for the best designed consumer magazine over 40k went to Emap’s Car magazine, the judges saying the title is ‘the fashion magazine of the car industry, which makes the most of its subject. A case-study in art direction.”

David KcKendrick picked up the award for best redesign for Natmag’s Esquire, which saw a revamp this year under new editor Jeremy Langmead. The judges felt it was a ‘redesign whose elegant simplicity aims to reposition the title – this is an excellent example of keeping the baby and throwing out the bath water.”

Esquire’s rival monthly men’s title, GQ, also picked up an award. Paul Solomons scooped the award for best designed front cover for the Conde Nast title, the judges commenting that it ‘looks and feels like a grown man’s magazine. Rarely has a capital A been more carefully positioned of a gatefold better used.”

The best designed front cover in the B2B sector went to Dean Dorat at Contagious magazine – the quarterly intelligence briefing in magazine published by Xtreme Publicaitons. The judges said: ‘Mysterious and eye-catching cover: perfect for its advertising industry audience.”
