Magazine ABCs: Glamour recovers from circulation dip

By Rachael Gallagher

Handbag-sized Glamour retained its position as the top of the women’s monthly and managed to turn around the decline in sales, as did monthly rival Cosmopolitan.

Conde Nast’s Glamour recorded a circulation increase of 1.2 per cent year on year for the first half of 2008 to 551,351, compared with its 7.1 per cent drop in circulation for the first half of 2007.

NatMag’s Cosmopolitan saw a healthy increase of 4.4 per cent to 470,735.

The biggest increase in the lifestyle sector came from Hachette Filipachi’s Pyschologies, which continued to flourish with a 15.5 per cent increase to 150,112.

Fellow fortysomething monthlies Easy Living and She both saw increases – up 0.5 per cent and 2.5 per cent respectively.

Both titles pitched in the thirtysomething bracket saw a decrease – Red down 1.9 per cent to 220,804 and Haymarket’s Eve down 5.1 per cent 155,076.

At the mature end of the market, Good Houskeeping retained the lead although down one per cent to 430,930, with Yours and Candis all also dropping small amounts.

Woman and Home rose by five per cent to 336,888, whilst Prima dropped 5.8 per cent to 282,544 – and Essentials remained relatively steady at 100,214.

All titles in the fashion sector remained stable – Natmag’s Marpers Bazaar the most significant increase out of the bunch at 3.1 per cent to 109,146, but still falling well below Vogue which retains the lead at 221,090, up 0.5 per cent.

Elle, despite increasing the fashion content in the last remained steady at 203,471 – more significant considering the 2.7 per cent year-on-year drop it saw for the second half of 2007.

IPC’s £18m launch of 2007, Look, saw a small decrease of 3.6 per cent, but still retained the lead in the weeklies sector ahead of Bauer Consumer Media’s Grazia.
