I was amazed to read in Press Gazette (13 May) that even fully
NCE-qualified senior journalists are still earning much less than
£20,000 a year in nearly all parts of the country.
There is no
other profession, or trade for that matter, where staff are so poorly
rewarded. The low pay leads to high staff turnover and means that it is
the newspapers themselves and the communities they serve which are
paying the price.
