Liverpool Echo is top Trinity daily

By Press Gazette

The Liverpool Echo has been named best daily or Sunday newspaper at the Trinity Mirror Regional Editorial Awards.

The paper, which was praised by judges for “an all-round fine performance from an all-round fine newspaper” also picked up the award for best sports pages.

The Journal in Newcastle won four awards including Scoop of the Year for its “Prisoners Open Your Mail” story. Judges said the story, which involved a private firm sending people’s personal bank details to prisoners, was a “shocking yet amusing story with the key ingredient for a scoop – you couldn’t make it up”.

Paid weekly paper went to the Chester Chronicle and the Bangor and Anglesey Mail was awarded the Free Weekly Newspaper of the Year award.

The Birmingham Mail’s “Stop the Bullies” campaign won the top campaign award.

The judging panel included Professor Peter Cole of Sheffield University and Society of Editors director Bob Satchwell.
