Leader of the pack: How the hacking scandal has let Lord Rothermere take Murdoch’s crown

By Press Gazette

The full effects of the hacking scandal and News Corp‘s decision to close the News of the World are only now becoming clear.

News International has been supplanted from its position as the UK’s biggest publisher of national newsappers for the first time in a generation. Daily Mail publisher Associated Newspapers now has the biggest market share.

In the Sunday market, the Mail on Sunday is now the UK’s biggest selling title and all the other Sunday tabloids have made massive gains following the closure of the News of the World on 10 July.

Arguably, Daily Mail proprietor Lord Rothermere has now taken Rupert Murdoch’s crown as Britain’s most powerful media magnate.
