Ofcom has awarded Ashford’s new FM commercial radio licence to the Kent Messenger Group’s KM-fm.
The new station will be music based and provide local news as well as regional and national updates.
Penny
Williams, head of radio for the Kent Messenger Group, said: “Local news
is really important to us. We have a news hub in Canterbury for the
five analogue and one digital stations that we already run. We will
produce the news for KM-fm from there, but will expand the existing
news team to incorporate a local reporter specifically for Ashford.”
KM-fm
will start broadcasting in July to a service area covering Ashford and
the immediately surrounding area with an adult population of around
60,000.
KM-fm is jointly owned by Kent Messenger, Barretts and the Hobbs Parker Partnership.
David
Lewis, chief executive of the Kent Messenger Group, said: “Securing the
Ashford licence reinforces our position as the county’s leading media
group and one uniquely placed to reach the residents and businesses of
Kent through print, radio and online.”
