The Kent on Sunday scooped the nationals with the story that Coronation Street star Adam Rickett was bidding to become the Conservative candidate in Michael Howard's constituency.
Editor Bernard Ginns said: "I got the tip from an excellent contact. It stood up and because it was such a great mix of politics and showbiz I decided it must go on the front page.
"It's a great new angle on one of the big political stories of the moment, and the nationals were left floundering rather feebly in our wake. Some didn't pick up on it until four days later."
The story was followed up by national papers including The Sun, the Daily Mail and The Daily Telegraph.
