The Star on Sunday has been fined €20,000 in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court over its coverage of the widely publicised trial of four students on a manslaughter charge following the death of a fifth student outside a Dublin nightclub.
The fine was imposed by the judge for criminal contempt following proceedings brought by the Director of Public Prosecutions against the Star on Sunday, the Examiner and the College Tribune student newspaper.
Star on Sunday editor Ger Colleran described the fine as “disproportionate punishment”. The Examiner was fined €1,000 and the student paper €250.
