The Leominster Journal has apologised in the High Court to Herefordshire county councillor Dick Burke over accusations that he had abused his position on the council.
Burke sued after a front-page article headed “Counter Attack on Secrecy Allegation” on 3 April, 2002, published shortly after the closure of a local swimming pool. His solicitor, Adam Tudor, told Mr Justice Gray that the piece alleged Burke had improperly harassed officials and, years before, wasted millions of pounds on a sports park at the expense of a new swimming pool.
Accepting a formal apology from Shropshire Newspapers, editor Michael Robinson and journalist Judith Burkin, Tudor said: “The defendants now wholly accept and recognise that the allegations contained in the article were simply untrue.”
