Jazzwise picks up award

Jazzwise, the UK's biggest-selling Jazz magazine, has been awarded publication of the year at the first Ronnie Scott's Jazz Awards.

The accolade comes as the magazine celebrates its 10th anniversary, and just under a month after the title won jazz publication of the year at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards in April.

"The award has tremendous significance for us," editor Jon Newey told Press Gazette. "It means that we have finally got the recognition that we have been striving to achieve over the past 10 years."

"We have been trying to change the way that jazz magazines look and think – moving away from the introspective, black-and-white style of traditional jazz magazines."

Newey said that while the magazine was trying to convey some of the "punch" associated with rock publications such as Mojo and Uncut, while keeping the editorial depth that people are used to in jazz magazines.

"The UK jazz scene is the hottest it's been in the last three or four decades. It's a very exciting time for us," said Newey.
