IRN Awards: Century Radio wins acclaim for Rhys Jones murder coverage

North West commercial radio station 105.4 Century Radio has won recognition for its news coverage in the wake of Liverpool schoolboy Rhys Jones’s murder last year.

The Guardian Media Group owned station won three of the biggest prizes at the Independent Radio News Awards held in London today. It is also nominated in the news categories of the Sony Radio Awards, due to be announced in May.

The station won IRN Scoop of the Year for its interview with a witness who saw the gunman open fire on Rhys Jones. Sean Woods picked up the News Reporter of the Year accolade and the station also picked up Best News Programme for its Gun Crime special. GMG Radio’s Real Radio Scotland also picked up an award for its contribution to IRN’s national news desk in 2007.

Bauer radio picked up three awards. Radio Clyde won the Best News Coverage award for its reporting of Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games bid win. Liverpool’s Radio City won Best Sports Coverage for its story on the ticket scandal surrounding Liverpool FC’s Champions league final against AC Milan. Magic 999 reporter Dave Easson took home the Best Funny Story award for his coverage of a pie-eating championship.

IRN is the main provider of news to the UK’s commercial radio stations.
