BBC union members were out in force last week to demonstrate against threats to the corporation’s independence from the Government in the wake of the Hutton Report, writes Sarah Boden.
Around 300 NUJ and BECTU members gathered outside the TV Centre in London, with simultaneous demos taking place in Glasgow, Belfast, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Cardiff.
NUJ broadcasting organiser Paul McLaughlin said: “It was brilliant.
We had support from everywhere in the UK, from Orkney right down to Cornwall. We had hundreds at all the main TV centres.”
The NUJ has called for a Mothers and Fathers of Chapel meeting at the BBC next week to decide the next course of action.
“We’ll be drawing together feelings of the chapels. Obviously, there is a lot going on. We’ll be looking at the state of the governors and at the situation with the Government,” McLaughlin added.
