Guardian accused of libel by officer
An army officer who was linked to allegations of torture has
accepted an offer of amends after accusing Guardian Media Group of
libel. Colonel Jonathan Campbell-James is now asking the High Court to
decide how much compensation he should receive over allegations that
appeared in a story in The Guardian last September headed “UK officers
linked to torture jail”.
Economist lays off Scots writer
Peter Jones, the Edinburgh-based Scotland and northern England
correspondent of The Economist, is being made redundant after 10 years
with the magazine. The move is understood to be part of the current
restructuring in The Economist’s editorial division, which is seeing
heavy investment in new growth areas such as North America and China.
Radio Times has £1m promo fund
Radio Times is to spend £1 million on marketing and promotions as
part of the battle for dominance of the TV listings sector. The 93p BBC
title is currently second in the market, and has refused to join a
price war taking place between rivals What’s On TV and TV Choice . Last
week, publisher Northern & Shell launched new listings mag Take 5 ,
priced at 40p.
Five to screen Empire awards
Empire magazine’s film awards will be shown on terrestrial
television for the first time on Five. The channel is to broadcast
highlights from the ceremony on March 15, two days after the event
takes place, in a bid to boost its credentials as the channel for movie
fans.
Future is ready to play it again
Future Publishing is to relaunch Musician , the members’ magazine of
the Musicians’ Union. The expanding publisher, already home to Total
Guitar and Rhythm magazines, won the contract for the relaunch from
Rhinegold Publishing.
The quarterly title will have a new look and the relaunch edition features an interview with jazz star Jamie Cullum.
Portfolio offers property insight
Property investment company Instant Access Properties is to launch
Portfolio, a quarterly magazine aimed at property investors. The mag
will “provide a practical and informative insight” into the property
investment market. The launch issue print run of 200,000 will be mailed
to all Instant Access members, associates and independent financial
advisers and will be handed out at property investment events
