Reporter’s Guide in association with Unite the Union
Unite has recruited record numbers of new members in recent years. It needs to.
The erosion of manufacturing, the traditional stronghold of organised labour, has cut deep into membership rolls. The good news is that growth is strongest in growing service sectors like finance and healthcare.
The union is working hard on recruiting younger members. The average age of a Unite member is 45, but student recruitment through freshers’ fairs, the Facebook group, a big presence at Glastonbury (pictured left), and events such as the Love Music Hate Racism gigs are a major part of the recruitment drive.
