Free first – Metro shortlisted as national newspaper of the year

By Press Gazette

Metro has made history by becoming the first free newspaper to be
shortlisted for the British Press Awards National Newspaper of the Year.
The team of independent judges said they felt
that its commercial impact on the industry as a whole meant that it
merited inclusion. The free daily has also been shortlisted in the
front-page of the year category for its splash John Peel: The day the
music died.
Since being launched in London in 1999 the
Associated Newspapers-owned title has spread throughout the country and
now as a total distribution of more than one million.
It contains some localised content but the majority of the news stories
are the same throughout the different editions. Last year it moved into
profit for the first time.
In addition to the main London edition it is
distributed on public transport in Bristol, Bath, Leicester, Derby,
Nottingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Newcastle, Manchester,
Leeds and Sheffield.
It is distributed outside London through a system of franchise
arrangements with regional newspaper companies such as Trinity Mirror,
Johnston Press and Newsquest who also print it and sell local adverts.
Metro was launched as a 20-minute read for commuters and boasts a much younger readership than conventional national papers.
The 2005 British Press Awards winners will be announced at the Hilton in Park Lane on Tuesday 15 March.
