Fleshing out the CV of “sodomy slogan” cleric

With the headline, “Tattoo gays with health warnings, demands clergyman”, Tuesday’s Daily Mail carries the story that the Reverend Peter Mullen is facing calls for his resignation after making outspoken remarks about gay men.

On his blog, he had written: “Let us make it obligatory for homosexuals to have their backsides tattooed with the slogan SODOMY CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH.”

The Mail piece helpfully informs readers that Mullen is “rector of St Michael’s Cornhill and St Sepulchre without Newgate in the City of London and writes a regular column for a regional newspaper”.

However, it fails to tell Mail readers an important detail from Mullen’s CV. For many years he was a prolific writer of outspoken opinion pieces and book reviews for … the Daily Mail.

By lunchtime on Tuesday, the loose-tongued cleric had issued an apology for his comments
