A seminar aimed at giving journalists a better knowledge of Islam and its followers is to be held in Glasgow.
“Understanding Islam” aims to promote informed reporting and a better understanding of the religion and its followers by bringing journalists and key figures in the Muslim community together.
Issues to be addressed at Glasgow Central Mosque on 28 April will include Shariah law, Hijab and the rights of women under Islam.
Britain’s first Muslim MP, Mohammed Sarwar, and the sacked BBC World Service journalist Abdul Hadi Jiad are due to speak at the conference, which was initiated by Glasgow Muslim reporter Elyas Hussain and has been organised by the NUJ.
Scottish NUJ organiser Paul Holleran said: “The war in Iraq and its aftermath presents journalists with fundamental challenges about how the religion and culture of Islam is reported and presented.
“Never has it been more important for journalists to understand and engage with all sections of the community.”
