Echo raises £25k for Quakers

By Press Gazette

The Northern Echo raised nearly £25,000 in the space of a week as part of its campaign to save Darlington Football Club, writes Dominic Ponsford.

The Newsquest-owned daily raised the cash by inviting businesses and individuals to sponsor a minute of a crucial home game against Rochdale.

Pictured is Newsquest NorthEast managing director David Kelly, right, handing a cheque for £22,850 to Quakers manager David Hodgson. Further donations since then have brought the total to nearly £25,000.

Darlington Football Club is in the relegation zone of Division Three and is being run by administrators.

The sponsor-a-minute appeal invited companies to pay £100 a minute and individuals £50. A roll of honour with details of sponsors was printed in The Northern Echo and in sister papers the Darlington & Stockton Times and The Advertiser.

Hodgson said: “The Northern Echo’s support has been invaluable and this is a magnificent amount of money to raise so quickly.”
