Cowan surprises Doris Lessing

My congratulations go out to Reuters’ London-based correspondent Matt Cowan.

He was the first to congratulate and inform the British novelist Doris Lessing that she had won this year’s Nobel Prize for literature.

Cowan had decided to do what all experienced hacks do ‒ he staked out the winner’s West Hampstead home and caught her unawares as she stepped out of a black London cab carrying her shopping.

“Oh Christ!” was her first reaction.

“Do you want to say something?” asked Cowan.

“Well, it’s been going on for 30 years. What shall I say?”
